■独奏者スティーヴン・ミードからのメッセージ

　私は、長年、ピーター・グレイアムに、ユーフォニアム協奏曲を書くつもりはないかと、話をもちかけてきました。彼は、今ではとても有名な作曲家であり、バンド(ウィンド・バンドとブラス・バンドの両方)のために挑戦的で刺激的な音楽を書きます。また、彼は金管楽器のためのすばらしい独奏曲をいくつか書いていますが、“ユーフォニアム協奏曲”は、私が“心の中で密かに夢見るまま”のものとなっていました。

　今はもう、私たちは“それ”を手にしています。それは、世界中の奏者が聴いて愉しめ、演奏したいと思う協奏曲です。確かに、それは演奏のやさしい曲ではありません。第1楽章と第3楽章は、技術的にたいへん難しいものがあり、また、ひじょうに速く動くピストン・バルブ（同時に指も）を必要とします。第2楽章は、よりシンプルですが、愉しいメロディーを持ち、それは長く心に残ることになるでしょう。

　『イン・リーグ・ウィズ・エクストローディナリー・ジェントルメン(In League with Extraordinary Gentlemen)』という副題をもつこの協奏曲の背後にあるコンセプトは、“3人の登場人物”に3つの楽章のストーリーを語らせ、各楽章のすべてに“旅”というテーマを織り込ませることになりました。ピーターは、“金管楽器を演奏しながら旅する者”として、世界で最もよく知られたひとりである私に結びつけ、協奏曲全体を通じ、この種のパーソナルな関連をもたせることがとてもいいアイディアだと考えたのです。

　第1楽章は「タイム・トラベラー(Time Traveller)」というタイトルがつけられ、作家 H. G. ウェルズによる“時間旅行”の概念に基づいています。曲は創造力で満たされ、速いテンポの中でのコントラストと脈を打つ律動的なアイディア、そして作品の構造を規定するような、いくつかの少しばかりゆるやかな旋律を聴かせる瞬間をともなっています。この楽章の練習は、とても愉しいものでした。

　「ファイナル・プロブレム(The Final Problem)」と呼ばれる第2楽章は、シャーロック・ホームズの死亡に言及しており、スイス・アルプスに由来するいくつかの“魂を呼び起こすような”音楽が聴かれます。この楽章は、いくつかの長いフレーズがあり、ユーフォニアムが奏でる旋律が美しい崇高な瞬間を作り出します。

　最終楽章の「グレート・レース(The Great Race)」は、膨大な数の音符があり、“80日間で世界一周する”ための、フィリアス・フォッグとその時間との戦いのレースを物語ります。これは明らかにせっかちな男性です。そして、時計のカチカチいう音は、彼の旅においてほとんど休みをとらせません！ 本物のヴィルトゥオーゾであることを求められる、モート・ペルペトゥオ(永久運動)のフィナーレ、それは聴衆に愛されるであろうことを、私が知っているものです。すでに、私はこのフィナーレの興奮を感じることができます。

　大阪市音楽団とともにこの作品の初演を行なっているというその光景は、実に刺激的なものです。私は、過去に大阪ですごしたハッピーな記憶をたくさん持っており、この歴史的な機会のために再び同地に戻ることをとても愉しみにしています。

"For many years I have been talking to Peter Graham about the possibility of writing a euphonium concerto. He is now such a well-known composer and writes challenging and exciting music for bands, both wind band and brass band. He has also written some super brass solos, but the euphonium concerto remained something that I secretly dreamed of.

Now, we have it, and it is a concerto that players the world over will enjoy listening to and attempting to perform. For sure it is not easy, and the first and third movements have great technical difficulty, and you will need valves that work very fast (and fingers too). The second movement is more simple but has a delightful melody that will stay in the mind for a long time.

The concept behind the piece, which has the subtitle of "In League with Extraordinary Gentlemen", tells the story in three movements of three characters, which all have interwoven into them the theme of travel. With me being one of the most famous brass playing 'travellers' in the world, Peter thought it would be a good idea to have a personal connection of this sort going through the concerto.

The first movement is titled: 'The Time Traveller', and is based on the concept on time travel, by the author H G Wells. The piece is full of invention, and contrasts and pulsating rhythmic ideas in fast tempo, with some slightly more relaxed melodic moments which provide the structure of the work. It has been a lot of fun to practice this.

The second movement, is called: 'The Final Problem', and refers to the death of Sherlock Holmes, and has some evocative music that could have come from the Swiss Alps. This has some the long phrases, and some beautiful sublime moments of euphonium melody.

The final movement, " The Great Race", has a huge number of notes, and tells the story of Phineas Fogg and his race against the clock, to go round the world 80 days. This is clearly a man in a hurry, and with the clock ticking allows himself little rest on his journey! It is a real virtuoso, moto perpetuo finale, and one which I know audiences are going to love. Already, I can sense the excitement of this finale.

The prospect of playing the first performance of this with the Osaka Municipal Band is exciting. I have many happy memories of time spent in Osaka, and look forward so much to returning for this historic occasion.

今回の定期は「物語と吹奏楽」と題して古代ギリシャ神話「ヘスペリデス」のお話や世界中で語り継がれている寓話をオムニバス形式でお届けします。後半は、グレイアムの作品を２曲、ユーフォニアム独奏にスティーヴン・ミード氏をお迎えして協奏曲（世界初演）と、ニュー・ウィンド・レパートリー２００６に収録されている交響的情景｢地底旅行｣をライヴでお聴きいただきます。お楽しみに（市音HPより）。
